About 200 women come to register each semester for workshops and classes. At left, Sister Mimi talks with Agostina about the offerings for the coming year. At right, Guadalupe discusses her plans with Sister Mimi. Each participant is asked to pay 1,000 pesos — about $2 — to register, plus 500 pesos per month. These fees provide income for the purchase of materials and for house maintenance. If a participant can't afford to pay, the fees are quietly waived.

The kitchen-all purpose room (left) provides just enough space for more than 25 women in the needlework class. María Eugenia (right) teaches hairstyling. Since there are no books, the students must take careful notes. Later they will practice hairstyling on one another.

Participants in the English class (left) pray together before beginning. This evening class includes students from grade-school age to octogenarians. Marcela (center) spins wool, while Evelina (right) makes a scarf on a traditional loom.
